Salisbury Rotary members and friends recently visited Salisbury Museum following Museum Director, Adrian Green’s, earlier visit to the club when he had explained the exciting upcoming ‘Past Forward’ project, which is now nearing completion.
On a rare sunny day, Adrian started by giving a brief history of this wonderful building, and explained the work to the fabric, which had been an essential part of the project, to preserve it for future generations.
Inside the building, we viewed the new galleries, already well filled with exhibits but not yet labelled or finalised, and not yet open to the public. We also looked at the upstairs Natural History Gallery and the Ceramics and Glass collection. The displays have been arranged in a modern and approachable way. Upstairs also includes a new Events Space and Meeting room which is already in use.
The new History of Salisbury Gallery was particularly interesting, with the famous Salisbury Giant, and the Scout car which was made in Salisbury. One of the Club’s former members, the late Frank Thomson, had been involved in the restoration of that car.
The Museum is due to reopen fully to the public in July on the completion of the ‘Past Forward’ project.
Salisbury Rotary members were delighted to have the opportunity to have a peep behind the scenes in the final stages of the project under the expert guidance of Director, Adrian Green, and wish the Museum well for the grand opening, and well-deserved success for the future.
